Manatee County Student Struck by Car at Bus Stop

A 14-year old Manatee County School District student who attends Lakewood Ranch High School was hospitalized last week after being struck by a car at the student’s bus stop.

Reports indicate that the student was crossing Verna Bethany Road, a rural two-lane road with a posted 55 mph speed limit, to board his school bus which had its red bus stop lights flashing and stop arms extended when he was struck by a 2001 Kia. The 19-year old driver of the Kia told FHP troopers that she saw the bus, but not the bus’ flashing lights.

The student was transported to the hospital with what were reported to be non-life threatening but serious injuries. The driver of the Kia was ticketed for failing to stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal.

Safe Student Florida will campaign for stronger school bus stop safety laws in next year’s legislative session.
